K-9 Unit

The Johnstown K-9 Unit was re-established in July of 2005 with Officer Bowman. In 2006, with the help of community donations, K-9 Vox was purchased and imported from the Netherlands. K-9 Vox served our community till he lost a battle with an autoimmune disease in 2010.

In 2011 K-9 Arco was purchased to replace K-9 Vox, and was also imported from the Netherlands. K-9 Arco was born on December 5, 2009 in Holland. He is a Belgian Malinois, bred as a working dog.

This breed of K-9 has a disciplined and social temperament and is typically quicker, smaller and more agile than similar breeds. These characteristics make the Belgian Malinois a good choice for the type of duties for which our agency utilizes them.

Their main duties include building and area searches, evidence location, criminal apprehension, tracking and narcotic detection (marijuana, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine and the derivatives.)

K-9 Arco was trained by Gold Shield Canine in Columbus, Ohio and completed a 400-hour training class. He is certified by the State of Ohio every two years in proficiency and reliability. Officer Bowman and K-9 Arco train continuously so that they can maintain their highest level of performance.

A special note of thanks goes out to all of those businesses and individuals who donated funding and provisions. Support from the community has been fundamental in the continuing success of the K-9 Unit and is deeply appreciated.
